There are many different types of acne triggers which depend on different individuals. In women, there are some cases where their acne problem is triggered by an excess of androgen (male) hormones.

The reason doctors usually attribute this to be the cause of acne is because of clues like hirsutism (excessive hair growth on the body or face), irregular menstrual cycles, premenstrual acne flares and increased blood levels of some androgens.

In such cases, the doctor may prescribe different types of drugs to cure acne like birth control pills which suppresses the androgen the ovaries produce. They may also prescribe low-dose corticosteroid drugs like dexamethasone or prednisone that help in the suppression of androgen that is produced by adrenal glands.

Then there are some doctors who may prescribe anti androgen drugs like spironolactone that helps reduce the excessive oil production in the skin of the victim.

Like most types of medication, there are side effects with these antiandrogen drugs that include tender breasts, fatigue, irregular menstruation and headaches.

Sometimes the doctor will have to resort to other types of procedures, along with drug therapy to treat an acne problem. One such procedure is the removal of the comedones on the patient during their visits. Sometimes the doctor will inject corticosteroids into the lesions to reduce the pain and size of inflamed nodules and cysts.

Whichever treatment method that it resorted to treat acne, remember that the early the treatment is started off, the easier it is to prevent acne scars. If you have any acne scarring, the doctor may suggest a medical or surgical procedure to reduce the scars like superficial lasers which help treat irregular scars.

Doctors also resort to microdermabrasion to ‘sand down’ scars or try transferring fat from a different part of the body to the acne scar to treat scars caused by cystic acne. If the situation is so bad, the doctor may even consider injecting a synthetic filling material under the skin so that the appearance of the scar is improved.

      Hi,
I have been coping with cystic acne for years.
Do you know of any non prescription treatments to erase the scars or at a minimum cause them to diminish?

      Thanks
